The Burial of Jesus
About the burial of the dead (1-3). The honouring of
the dead and the wake (4-10)
1. Now when the evening had come, Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable councillor who also waited for the Kingdom of God, came and went in boldly to Pilate and requested the body of Jesus. (He was a good and just man, and had not consented to the decision of the council).
2. And Pilate marvelled that He was already dead and, calling the centurion to him, asked him whether He had been dead for long. And when he had heard it from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph who came and took down the body of Jesus.
3. And there came Nicodemus, too, who had come before to
Jesus at night. He brought a mixture of myrrh and aloe, about a hundred pounds in weight.
Then they took the body of Jesus and wound it in linen cloths with the herbs, according to
the Jewish burial custom. (Chap. 83: 1-3)
I, Christ, explain, correct
and deepen the word:
It is written, "Then they took the body of Jesus and wound it in linen cloths with the herbs, according to the Jewish burial custom. It was a Jewish burial custom - a custom as such, but not a commandment. Therefore, I, Christ, say:
If your still existing earthly law permits, wrap the dead earthly bodies in cloths and give them to the earth; or if you recognize that the soul of the deceased lives in God because the person has led a righteous, God-filled life, then give the perishable body over to the fire a few days after death. Thus, the substances can more quickly be given to the earth, from which man comes.
4. Now in the place where He was crucified, there was a garden and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein no man was yet laid. There they laid Jesus, and it was at the beginning of the second watch when they buried Him, because of the Jews' preparation day, for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
5. And Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, and Mary, the mother of Joses, looked at the sepulchre in which He had been laid.
6. And also the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed, bearing lamps in their hands, looked at the sepulchre and how His body was laid and began to cry and lament.
7. And they returned and prepared herbal mixtures and ointments and waited for the end of the Sabbath.
8. Now on the day following the day of preparation, the high priests and pharisees went together to Pilate, saying, "Master, we remember that this deceiver said while still alive, 'After three days, I will rise again.'
9. Command therefore to have the sepulchre secured until the third day is over, lest His disciples come at night and steal Him and say to the people, 'He is risen from the dead', and the last deceit is worse than the first.
10. Pilate said to them, "You have a guard, go your
way and make it as secure as you can. So they went and secured the sepulchre,
sealing the stone and setting guards in front of it, until the third day would be over.
(Chap. 83:4-10)
I, Christ, explain, correct
and deepen the word:
Recognize that your earthly customs show you where you stand. Why do you watch over your dead? You might say: in order to honour the deceased. I, the Christ, ask you: Whom do you want to honour? In whose honour?
If a person has not paid nor pays honour to God, he is then anxious to be honoured by people and will try everything to be honoured alive or dead. When people honour people, they do not give honour to God, who knows all things, who is the life of the soul.
The person who watches over the dead, worrying that the earthly garment of the
soul might be stolen, as was the case with the guard at Jesus' sepulchre - is aware of his own misdeed and thus of his sin.
