The Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane
The sleeping disciples in the garden of Gethsemane -
The one who just gathers spiritual knowledge without putting it into practice cannot
understand a situation and falls asleep over the need of his neighbour - The will and plan of God will be fulfilled (1-13)
1. When they went to the Mount of Olives, Jesus said to them, "I will be an offence to all of you this night; for it is written, 'I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will scatter.' But when I rise, I will go before you into Galilee.”
2. Simon answered and said to Him, "Even though all men will be offended because of You, I will not be offended by any means.” And Jesus said to him, "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan wanted to own you, so that he may sift you like wheat. But I have prayed for you that your faith will not fail. And when you are steadfast, strengthen your brothers.”
3. And he said to Him, "Lord, I am ready to go with You, into prison and also to death.” And Jesus said, "I tell you, Simon, the cock will not crow this night, before you have denied three times that you know Me.”
4. After they had crossed the Kidron brook, Jesus came with them into the garden of Gethsemane. And He said to His disciples, "Sit here, while I go yonder and pray.” (Judas, too, who betrayed Him, knew this place, for Jesus often stayed there with His disciples.)
5. Then He said to them, "My soul is sorrowful, even unto death; remain here and watch with Me.”
6. And He went a little farther, fell on His face and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me; however, not as I will, but as You will.”
7. And an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him. And He came to His disciples and, when He found them sleeping, He said to Peter, "Could you not watch with Me one hour?
8. Watch and pray that you do not fall into temptation: The spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak.”
9. He went away again a second time and prayed, "O, My Father, if this is not possible, if this cup may not pass from Me, Your will be done.”
10. And in deep agony, He prayed even more fervently. And His sweat fell on the ground like big drops of blood.
11. And He came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
12. And He left them and went away once more and prayed for the third time, saying, "O, My Father, not My will be done but Yours, on earth as in heaven.”
13. Then He came to His disciples and said to them,
"Sleep on now and take your rest; behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is
delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going: Behold, the one who betrays Me
is here.” (Chap. 77:1-13)
I, Christ, explain, correct
and deepen the word:
The apostles and disciples who were with Me in the garden of Gethsemane fell asleep again and again. This shows that their souls were not alert enough to be able to grasp the significance of the event which I then had to face.
Many of My apostles and disciples could not deeply understand Me and My teaching, the law of life. Since they, too, were often preoccupied with themselves, they could not comprehend the great whole, nor did they gain deeper insight. Again and again, I had to admonish them to not only speak about the law, God, which I taught and lived as an example, but to fulfil it in everyday life. Yet even they - as many people in all generations - only collected and collect spiritual knowledge. Some of My apostles and disciples were overcome by pride again and again, because they walked at My side and were tempted into overestimating themselves.
In many people, My repeated admonishments fell on barren ground; for they sowed again and again in the flesh, instead of in the Spirit, God. Since they were with Me or flocked around Me again and again to hear about the eternal truth, they gathered spiritual knowledge and could therefore answer many questions. Thus, they believed that the knowledge about the laws of God alone would be sufficient to fill the soul with life and power. They confused knowledge with wisdom and this drew many a one into a whirlpool of overestimating themselves.
In the garden of Gethsemane, too, I wanted to explain to them what it means to sleep in such a decisive situation. This is why I awoke them and made it clear to them that they were hardly able to understand the situation of their neighbour. Their physical eyes were heavy because their spiritual eyes did not see what was about to happen. Thus, they faced with indifference the grave event which lay before Me - even though I had repeatedly talked about the aforesaid hour in which I would become visible and vulnerable to the darkness.
Recognize that spiritual knowledge does not awaken the soul to Inner Life, nor does it make it alert and aware of the things and events which lie before it and before its neighbours.
The person who is preoccupied with himself falls asleep over the grief of his neighbour because the soul is still weak, that is, it has too little spiritual power, since the person lacks actualization. The egocentric person also misses the impulses which are given to him day after day, because he sows only in the flesh and not in the Spirit, God. Thus, he does not recognize himself, and also faces the sorrow of his neighbour with indifference.
Had My apostles and disciples carried Me consciously within themselves, that is, had they received Me in their hearts through the actualization of the eternal laws, they would not have fallen asleep and would have become aware of the event that was in the offing, for I had revealed it to them in parables again and again.
Only after My physical death did the great awakening come in many people, and many a one became a faithful follower and began to fulfil what I, as Jesus, had commanded him. Yet as long as they walked at My side, many did not understand what I said to them and who I was and Am.
The will of the Father, which was also My will in Jesus and is My will as Christ, was fulfilled. I accomplished what had to happen, because the law, God, was not acknowledged as a result of the sins of the sons and daughters from the lineage of David and from other lineages and because of the sins of the Jews. Since they had not established the Kingdom of God on earth with Me, the cross had to be set up. Despite all adversities, My kingdom, the Kingdom of Peace, will be established through the "It is finished”.
So it is in the plan of God. The will of God is being fulfilled. God is boundless, without time or space. Even though His will was not fulfilled at the time when I walked over the earth as Jesus, it will be fulfilled at a later time. The light, God, is the all-power. The all-power is the victor over the darkness.
God does not look at human time. What to man is today or tomorrow is the present to God. God gives free will to every soul and every person. When His plan is not fulfilled on the path of liberation through the fulfilment of the law of God, then it will be fulfilled through redemption. The latter is given to people and souls as a support and help, and assists them to attain liberation from the bondage of sin.
